FAQ
Running a social media service is a lot of work. We should know.
What happens to my stuff after I cancel?
If you choose to cancel your account on the server will be deleted after 14 days. We wait, in case you change your mind.
However, if you wait longer, all of your content will be deleted. You can read more about moving or leaving Mastodon account here.

I can host my own Mastodon server
Awesome! Cool! Go do it. The ecosystem should be diversified.
But not everyone has the technical know-how, or the time to run it themselves. So we’re trying to bridge that gap.

How do I cancel?
Simply log in to your management account here and cancel your membership.
Memberships are not prorated, so if you cancel in the middle of a membership period you will not be refunded the difference.

How does this work?
You sign up for a membership, and within 24 hours you’ll receive an email with instructions on how to join the larp.social server.

Is larp.social moderated?
Yes. Report issues to the support email and we will deal with it. The project is still getting off the ground, so we don’t really have any procedures just yet, but we’ll get there together.
However, keep in mind, that Mastodon is decentralised network, and we cannot moderate users on other nodes. You can however block them quite easily.

I love this, but I genuinely cannot afford it.
I get it. There are a lot of people out there whose budgets are extremely tight, and while €5 is just a cup of coffee for some, for others it is a matter of whether or not they eat dinner. And it is not fair that someone should be excluded on that basis.
Unfortunately the reality is that this cannot be funded without direct user payment. However, the pricing model I’ve set up will allow me to give away accounts every now and then when enough paying users have signed up. If you would like to sign up for one of those, send an email to [email protected] with the word “Waitlist” in the subject field, and I will reach out on a first come, first serve basis.

What guarantees do I have that you’ll be around forever?
Absolutely none. This is an experiment to see whether there’s a will in our community to sustain alternative non-predatory services and systems.
That being said I will do my level best to work hard to keep this running for as long as I can.

Why do I have to pay?
Facebook is free, right? So is Twitter (or … X, I guess). So are most social media platforms. They are free because they are scraping and harvesting your data. They use that data for advertising, to build consumer profiles and to train their AI models.
By paying for the service we don’t have to do any of that. Instead it is funded by you.
So, what are you paying for? You’re paying for bandwidth, servers and storage, and a little bit of my time maintaining the service – making sure that the latest security updates are installed and what not.

What is Mastodon?
Mastodon is what is called a decentralised social media platform. That’s a lot of technobabble, but essentially it means that anyone can launch their own Mastodon node (or server) and provide access to the network using that server.
You can get an app for your favourite mobile device, and access the network just like any other social media platform. But because its decentralised no singular organisation or individual controls the network. No Zuckerbergs or Musks here.
